The Pirates of the Caribbean films have given us plenty of thrills and laughs over the years. As any fan can tell you, the real heart and soul of those movies is Captain Jack Sparrow, brought to life by the unparalleled Johnny Depp.

As we set sail for future adventures, all fans are wondering – will our favorite rum-loving pirate come back for more?

Having played the character for over a decade, Depp’s quick-witted pirate has been the lifeblood of this beloved franchise, turning it from a simple theme park ride into a global cinematic phenomenon.

With a new Pirates movie coming sooner than later, will Johnny Depp still grace us with his tipsy performance?

Will Johnny Depp Come Back as Jack Sparrow?

As of September of 2023, Johnny Depp won’t be returning to Pirates of the Caribbean as Captain Jack Sparrow. The messy divorce between Depp and the studio, which came about due to the star’s legal battle with Amber Heard, made him distance himself from the production company that saw him bloom into an international phenomenon.

In 2018, Depp was dropped from the sixth film in the franchise following domestic abuse allegations made by his ex-wife Amber Heard. However, Depp has denied the allegations and has won a defamation lawsuit against Heard.

Even before Depp’s courtroom saga emerged, he insisted that the House of Mouse was looking to replace him as Jack Sparrow. In the middle of the legal battle, Depp assured the world that he would never work for Disney again, not even if the studio offered him “(…) $300 million and a million alpacas.”

In recent months, there have been reports that Depp is in talks to return as Jack Sparrow. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has said that he would “love” to have Depp back in the role, and Depp himself has said that he would be “open” to returning if the script was right.

Why Johnny Depp Should Return as Jack Sparrow

For many fans of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, there’s only one Jack Sparrow: Johnny Depp. This sentiment is shared not just by fans, but also by the rest of the Pirates crew. Gibbs’ actor, Kevin McNally, has voiced his support for Depp, claiming that “Without Jack, there is no Pirates franchise.”

The public’s favorable opinion of Johnny Depp after the legal battle against Amber Heard could also be a major factor in Disney’s bringing back the legendary actor for the role.

Considering the franchise’s diminishing returns, the deciding factor on whether or not Depp comes back to the franchise could be his paycheck. If the actor was willing to negotiate a lower pay, the studio might be more likely to bring him back for Pirates 6.

What Do Fans Think About Johnny Depp Returning as Jack Sparrow?

It’s safe to say that fans are divided on whether or not they want Depp back as Jack Sparrow.

On one side, many argue that Depp’s charismatic and eccentric performance is irreplaceable, having become synonymous with the franchise. They claim the film’s magic stems from Depp’s ability to make Jack Sparrow larger-than-life yet still relatable, bringing heart and humor to the role.

For these loyal fans, a Pirates film without Captain Jack just wouldn’t feel right.

However, others contend that Depp’s personal troubles, including legal issues, should disqualify him from reprising the role. They believe the baggage of his public image would be a distraction and not fair to the franchise. There’s also a sense that perhaps it’s time for a fresh interpretation of Captain Jack Sparrow,

Will There Be a New Pirates of the Caribbean Movie?

Disney has made it very clear that there will be more Pirates of the Caribbean films. From a rumored female-led reboot starring Margot Robbie, to a new trilogy directed by The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin, this seafaring franchise is far from reaching port still.

One thing is for sure, however: the new Pirates film will more likely be rebooting the series.

While most fans would agree that the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow should have ended with At World’s End, the poor critical reception and disappointing box office returns of the final two Pirates films should be a wake-up call for Disney.

When Will the New Pirates of the Caribbean Movie Be Released?

Despite the multiple rumors, there’s still no definite release date for Pirates of the Caribbean 6. Considering the ongoing WGA strike obstructing the production of most new films and TV projects, it will probably take some time before Disney even announces the movie’s name.

Apparently, both the Craig Mazin reboot and the Margot Robbie Pirates revival are moving forward over at the House of Mouse. After more than half a decade without a new Pirates film, this is the longest time the franchise has lain dormant like this.

If the rumors are true, however, Pirates fans could be looking forward to two new films coming on the horizon.

Now, whether or not any of those films will feature the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow – or if he’ll be played by Johnny Depp – is something that’s still up for debate.

Let’s just hope that the series can continue with the same quality standards we know it for. After all, we’re long overdue for some swashbuckling shenanigans on the silver screen.
