Mike & Molly was a fan favorite during its six-season run. Centered around the sweet and quirky romance between Mike Biggs and Molly Flynn, the show delivered a refreshing take on an odd couple finding love.

Unlike most TV romances that focused on thin protagonists, Mike & Molly showed plus-sized individuals finding love. Audiences loved watching the relatable duo navigate the ups and downs of modern dating, engagement, and marriage.

When CBS canceled Mike & Molly abruptly in 2016, fans were outraged. The show’s followers felt betrayed that Mike and Molly did not get the happy ending they deserved. From weight loss to all sorts of theories, virtually no one knows why the show got the ax.

Why Was Mike & Molly Canceled?

The real reason why Mike & Molly ended on its sixth season involves a license dispute between CBS and Warner Bros TV. Unlike other shows, Mike & Molly faced a long cancelation process due to CBS’ inaction. Rather than canceling or renewing the show, CBS ceased communications with WB, leading to an “unofficial” cancelation.

Even the show’s stars couldn’t believe Mike & Molly was ending. Across social media, figures like Melissa McCarthy (Molly) and Billy Gardell (Mike) voiced their concerns. “I was shocked and heartbroken,” said McCarthy in a now-infamous post.

It also didn’t help that Mike & Molly‘s ratings experienced a steady decline. The show simply didn’t pull the numbers other Chuck Lorre shows did, including The Big Bang Theory. This decline was also a huge influence in the decision to cancel the show on its sixth season.

Was Mike & Molly Canceled Because of Melissa McCarthy’s Weight Loss?

As popular a theory as that is, Melissa McCarthy’s weight loss had nothing to do with the show’s cancelation. As we saw earlier, Mike & Molly concluded due to its license running out. It had nothing to do with McCarthy’s impressive transformation around 2015.

The actress lost around 40 pounds in 2015. While that might have made her “unfit” for her role as Molly, it’s nothing that a few instances of creative writing can’t fix.

Though she was always known for her figure, McCarthy adopted a high-protein, low-carb diet in 2015, which caused a stunning makeover.

McCarthy isn’t the only one who underwent a drastic transformation after Mike & Molly. Her co-star, Billy Gardell, looks nearly unrecognizable now after losing over 150 pounds.

Now, “Mike” advocates for a healthier lifestyle and tells people that “It doesn’t matter what age you are. If you are willing to do something a day at a time, you can change anything.

Where Are The Real Mike and Molly Now?

As we all know, Melissa McCarthy is a Hollywood regular, while Billy Gardell stuck to TV performances. The last we saw of McCarthy was her role as Ursula in The Little Mermaid remake.

On the other hand, Gardell has kept himself busy through multiple roles on TV. He kept his close partnership with Chuck Lorre, creator of Mike & Molly and The Big Bang Theory, to name a few. He now stars in the comedy Bob ❤️ Abishola, also on CBS. The series was recently renewed for a fifth season.
