No one likes to see their favorite character leave a TV show, especially if there’s no reason given. But knowing the specific reason doesn’t always make things easier.

That’s the case with Sophia Bush, who starred as Erin Lindsay on Chicago P.D. Fans of the show were sad when she left but weren’t sure why it happened.

Then, when the real reason came out, it only served to make the whole situation more heartbreaking.

Read on to find out the shocking reason Sophia Bush left Chicago P.D. and how she’s moving forward to new projects.

Why Did Sophia Bush Leave Chicago P.D.?

Sophia Bush left Chicago P.D. in season 4, claiming there was abusive behavior on set.

When the actor first left the show, she didn’t give a specific reason for doing so. But she was very adamant from the beginning that she chose to leave Chicago P.D. because she wanted to.

In response to an Instagram commenter, Sophia Bush replied, “[…] took me a long time and a lot of hard work to get out of that show. Please don’t demean my capabilities by degrading my position. I left because I wanted to. End of story.”

For a long time, that’s about all Bush had to say on the subject. Then, in November of 2017, just six months after leaving Chicago P.D., Bush joined her some of her former cast and crew members of One Tree Hill to denounce that show’s creator, Mark Schwahn, for an abusive and hostile work environment.

The very next year, Bush revealed that she also experienced similar abuse on the set of Chicago P.D. However, according to Bush, her representative advised her to only come forward on one story in 2017.

“My rep said to me, ‘You’re going to have to pick,’” Bush said on the podcast Drama Queens in April 2023. “’You can either tell the story about your first boss or you can tell the story about your coworker but you can’t tell both because then it looks like it’s your fault.’ As her One Tree Hill co-star said tearfully, “[Bush] chose us.”

Even though Sophia didn’t go public with her claims about Chicago P.D., NBC did launch an investigation into the behavior of her former co-star Jason Beghe. Afterwards, Beghe apologized for his actions on set, citing “anger issues” for which he was receiving help.

Will Sophia Bush Ever Come Back To Chicago P.D.?

It’s highly unlikely that Sophia Bush will ever return to Chicago P.D. since she left after claiming abuse on set.

On the Drama Queens podcast, Bush compared what allegedly happened on Chicago P.D. to her and her co-stars experiences on One Tree Hill.

“What [Hilarie Burton] experienced [on One Tree Hill], the way [she] got yelled at, that’s exactly the shit I was dealing with in Chicago and also had a group of men who were like, ‘I love you so much, you’re our best friend,” Sophia Bush explained. “[They] never got involved and never stood up.”

“And I know some of them are mad that I acknowledge that when we talk about this show as well, and you know what? I don’t care. That fear that I’m going to keep talking about it better be what makes you behave better on every set you’re on.”

Fan Reactions To Sophia Bush Leaving

Fans of Sophia Bush and her character, Detective Erin Lindsay, were both surprised and sad at the announcement of Bush’s departure in 2017.

Many of them used the hashtag “Linstead” to express their disappointment that half of their favorite couple was leaving.

“You break my heart,” one user posted on X (formerly Twitter). “No more #chicagopd for me no more #Linstead. It’s a nightmare.”

Another said they dedicated years to this “OTP” (one true pairing) of Lindsay and Halstead.

Melissa Sagemiller, who appeared on two episodes of the Chicago TV universe, posted her appreciation for Sophia Bush after she left the show and spoke out.

“I can only imagine your pain. Thank you for standing up for all of us.”

What Is Sophia Bush Doing Now?

Sophia Bush has continued acting consistently since leaving Chicago P.D. and even starred as one of the leads in another TV show.

She has had single-episode appearances on four TV shows since 2018, including This Is Us (2020). One of her biggest roles was Veronica in nine episodes of Love Victor (2020-2022).

She also appeared on 13 episodes of Good Sam (2022) as the titular Dr. Sam Griffith alongside Jason Isaacs.

How Was Character Written Off Chicago P.D.?

Erin Lindsay left Chicago P.D. when she took a job with the FBI in New York at the end of season 4.

Lindsay’s mother, Bunny, is under investigation for the murder of her boyfriend. While Lindsay tries to figure out what really happened, Jay Halstead gets his mother’s wedding ring in order to propose to Lindsay.

But Lindsay leaves to continue dealing with her mother before Halstead can pop the question. By the end of the episode, Bunny’s case is in the hands of the FBI. Lindsay agrees to take a job with the FBI under the condition that all charges against her mother be dropped.

Sadly, Lindsay leaves for her new life in New York without talking to Jay or almost anyone else. They wait for her so Jay can propose and they can celebrate; when she doesn’t turn up, Jay calls her, but Lindsay declines it.

The season – and Erin Lindsay’s character arc – ends with her looking out over the city of Chicago before leaving permanently.
