America Ferrera was one of the biggest draws to NBC’s Superstore. Her character, Amy, and the will-they-won’t-they relationship she had with Ben Feldman’s Jonah drew viewers in for five seasons over five years.

But in 2020, Ferrera made the unexpected decision to leave the show and wrap up Amy’s character arc. The news devastated fans, and unfortunately the show only ran for one more season following Ferrera’s departure.

The guide below looks into why America Ferrara chose to leave Superstore and how the writer’s resolved Amy’s story. We also explore why the show was cancelled and America Ferrera is up to now.

Why Did America Ferrera Leave Superstore?

America Ferrera left Superstore due to her second pregnancy and a desire to spend more time with her family.

In February 2020, America Ferrera announced that she would not be returning for the show’s sixth season. She made a post on Instagram stating how grateful she felt to be part of the show for five years.

“The last five years on Superstore have been some of the most rewarding, enriching and enjoyable years of my career,” Ferrara said.

“Producing, directing and acting with this wonderful cast and crew has given me opportunities to grow as a person and storyteller […] As I start the next chapter for my family and career, I wish only the best, and much continued success, to my beloved Superstore family.”

The “next chapter” for Ferrera’s family largely included the fact that they were expecting their second child. On New Year’s Eve 2019, Ferrara announced her pregnancy via Instagram.

At the time, she and her husband, Ryan Piers Williams, had an 18-month-old son, Sebastian. “Now that I’m gonna have two,” Ferrera explained to People when asked about her motherhood, “I’m sure that’s just gonna get even more complicated.”

“But in a way, having children […] feels so much more important. I feel like being a mother has energized me and has focused me.”

What Happened To Amy On Superstore?

America Ferrera’s character on Superstore, Amy, left the store for a new position at its parent company in California.

Amy’s partner, Jonah, played by Ben Feldman, offered to leave St. Louis to come to California with her. Season 5 ends on a cliffhanger, with Amy and Jonah having to decide what to do.

America Ferrera agreed to finish out her storyline, so Amy did appear in the first two episodes of season 6. But on the 100th episode of Superstore, Amy and Jonah break up, and Amy moves to Los Angeles alone.

Feldman, Ferrera, writer Owen Ellickson, and co-showrunner Gabe Miller all collaborated on the relationship’s trajectory.

Amy and Jonah splitting up was “the best solution that we all came up with together,” Miller said, “the thing that felt most real.”

Amy does return for the two-part finale of season 6, which also ended up being the series finale. In response to upper management’s decision to close the store, Amy quits her job at corporate.

The final episode has her confronting her remaining feelings for Jonah. The two reconcile, and in a flash forward to the future, Amy and Jonah are married and raising two children.

Does America Ferrera Come Back To Superstore?

America Ferrera left after the second episode of season 6 of Superstore but came back for the last two episodes of the series.

Ferrera, along with the show’s fans, didn’t expect season 6 to be the final season when she left. “I expected and hoped that the show would go on after my departure for many, many years,” she told Variety in 2021.

She knew that her character had room to come back, but she didn’t think it would be so soon. The writers had to rework the show’s trajectory to account for the sudden end of Superstore.

So, after leaving in season 6, episode 2, Ferrera’s character Amy came back just twelve episodes later. Over the two-part series finale, Amy tries to help save Cloud 9. The plan fails, but a time skip to the future shows that she and Jonah are at least happily married.

Why Was Superstore Cancelled?

NBC did not give an official reason behind the cancellation of Superstore, but critics speculate it stemmed from America Ferrera’s departure and the lack of new viewers.

NBC President of Scripted Content, Lisa Katz, announced the cancellation in December 2020.

Superstore has always been a signature NBC series that has never failed to make us laugh while also thoughtfully examining important issues people care deeply about,” Katz said in her statement.

“This has been an amazing group of writers, producers, actors and crew to work with and we are incredibly grateful for all their contributions.”

“This show will forever hold its place among the top workplace comedies for which we have a cherished history.”

While NBC didn’t give a specific reason for cancelling Superstore, the announcement came just a month after America Ferrera’s supposed final episode.

The Wrap also reported that season 6 had a slight drop in viewership from season 5. Although the show has always been consistently solid with critics and viewers, Ferrera’s departure and the shrinking audience may have made NBC too nervous to continue.

What Is America Ferrera Doing Now?

America Ferrera recently starred in the 2023 smash hit Barbie and the new film Dumb Money. She also directed episodes of Gentefied and had a recurring role in the Apple TV+ miniseries WeCrashed.

One of the main reasons America Ferrera left Superstore was to spend more time with her family. She was pregnant at the time and has since given birth to her second child.

She was back to work just four months after the birth, but with a growing family, it makes sense that she’s pulled back on her Hollywood projects for now.

Still, she is still actively working, so fans can still see her on both the big and small screens. After leaving Superstore, America Ferrera worked on Netflix’s Gentefied as both a producer and director.

She was also in WeCrashed, a 2022 miniseries about the rise and fall of WeWork.

But most notably was her lauded performance in 2023’s Barbie, which is currently sitting on an over $1.4 billion box office. Her latest film, Dumb Money, just opened in September and has an 84% Rotten Tomatoes score.

So, while fans may have been disappointed that Superstore ended, they can still see plenty of America Ferrera’s talent in other projects.
