A modern take on the classic 1980s Hawaii-based private eye series, the Magnum P.I. reboot first aired in 2018 starring Jay Hernandez as Thomas Magnum. While fans tuned in to see a new generation meet the Ferrari-driving gumshoe, the show introduced a whole new audience to the tropical world of Magnum and his friends.
Magnum can always count on his companions in the show when things get rough. If there’s someone who was there through thick and thin that was Theodore Calvin, better known as TC.
The helicopter pilot, played by Stephen Hill, proved pivotal for Magnum’s success more than once. Over five seasons, viewers saw the tight bond between Magnum and TC as they took on cases and adventures around the islands.
However, in the series finale, TC has undergone a drastic change – one that might leave him out of commission for good.
How Did TC End Up in a Wheelchair?
An attacker shot TC in the cliffhanger of the episode Charlie Foxtrot. The unknown assailant shot TC twice while he was working, leaving him with little time to respond. Charlie Foxtrot ended with a nail-biting cliffhanger, as it seemed like TC was about to meet his demise.
With the unexpected news that Season 5 would be Magnum P.I.‘s last season, some fans were bracing for a shocking conclusion. Maybe things wouldn’t end well for everyone in Magnum’s crew after all.
However, in the next episode, we find out that TC survived the assault. Not unscathed, though, as he was left paralyzed from the waist down. Shammy, played by Christopher Thornton, saved TC’s life and was now helping him adapt to his disability.
TC Might Walk Again
Things don’t look quite so grim for TC, as near the episode’s end, he was able to move his toes a bit. Granted, that’s still a far cry from “walking,” but it’s a start on the long way to recovery.
The entire subplot of TC being paralyzed is just another layer of drama for an undeniably touching Season 5. As the series’ last season, it’s clear the showrunners wanted to go out with a bang.
After all, Magnum P.I. had a complicated story with networks. After surviving one prior cancelation by CBS in Season 4, NBC revived the show for another season. This time, however, it seems to be lights out for the cast of Magnum P.I.
The Finale Did Justice to TC’s Character
While shocking, TC’s disability is just the tip of the iceberg for TC’s character arc. After five seasons of being Magnum’s rock, circumstances put TC in an unfortunate position, no doubt. However, knowing the pilot, he’ll be back on his feet sooner than later.
Still, it’s sad to see the series go just after it was gaining traction again. Even now, fans are clamoring for a new season to arrive, with a Change dot org petition that already has more than ten thousand fans asking for Season 6.
