The geniuses at Pixar have created some of the most touching stories over the years. From Toy Story to Finding Nemo, the studio has shaped the childhood of millions.

Like any other studio, Pixar isn’t against producing sequels. Movies like Toy Story 3 and Monsters University proved commercial and critical success for the studio.

Still, some of the most popular Pixar movies remain as single entries. Ratatouille, Coco, and Luca – these beloved films never got a sequel. And neither did WALL-E. However, WALL-E‘s case is unique because, for a while, there was a WALL-E 2. What happened to it, then? Let’s find out!

When Will WALL-E 2 Be Released?

At the moment, there are no plans to release WALL-E 2. This is not a case of an unexpected cancelation or anything like that. According to Pixar’s president, Jim Morris, WALL-E 2 was never meant to happen.

With no plans to ever produce a sequel, it’s safe to say that WALL-E 2 won’t come out anytime soon. This is sad news for fans of the adorable automaton, but rest assured: there’s a good reason why the sequel was canceled.

Why Was WALL-E 2 Canceled?

Producer Jim Morris told Entertainment Weekly in 2016 that he considers WALL-EA love story that had its beginning, middle, and end,” which is why “we’re not really planning any further stories in those worlds at this point.

Morris revealed he felt a bit split on this decision, seeing as he worked closely on the movie’s production. Still, even though he revealed he thinks “It would be good to go back and visit that world and let everybody know that the humans actually survived,” the final call was to cancel WALL-E 2 altogether.

The good news for WALL-E and EVE fans is that we did get a sequel of sorts to their story. While not as developed as we’d like, the movie tells us what happens to the humans on Earth. The end credits reveal the humans – with WALL-E and EVE’s help – restored the planet to its former beauty.

If we keep Morris’ statement in mind, any plans for a sequel were always going to focus on the humans rebuilding Earth. Since the credits already showed us what happened to the crew of the Axiom, a sequel feels a bit redundant now.

In a way, WALL-E‘s end credits are as close to a sequel as we’re going to get. For now, at least.

Will There Ever Be a WALL-E Sequel?

It’s still possible for Pixar to release a WALL-E 2. The Jim Morris Cinemablend interview happened in 2016 – almost a decade ago. WALL-E itself will be turning 20 in five years, meaning there’s still hope for Pixar to change their minds.

Since 2016, Pixar has released four sequels, with a fifth one, Inside Out 2, coming in 2024. It seems as if the studio’s stance on sequels as a whole might have changed in the past decade. With this in mind, a WALL-E sequel might be more likely than we think.

WALL-E was a massive hit for Pixar. While not as commercially successful as, say, Toy Story, it performed better than Cars at the box office. Seeing as how the talking automobiles got not one but two sequels, WALL-E 2 sounds more and more like an impending possibility. For now, however, a WALL-E sequel is sadly just a pipe dream.
