It finally happened. Against all odds, Nintendo formally announced a live-action The Legend of Zelda film is in production. The success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie might have finally convinced the Japanese video game company to release the long-awaited film.

Like Mario, The Legend of Zelda is one of Nintendo’s most popular franchises. This year, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom became a massive best-seller on the Nintendo Switch. The video game juggernaut would release its Zelda movie at just the right time for fans eager for more Hylian adventures.

However, with a franchise as notorious as The Legend of Zelda, and with the shaky history of live-action video game films, a lot of things can go wrong in this trip to Hyrule.

Let’s take a look at how Nintendo prepares to deliver what might be the most anticipated video game movie in history.

The Legend of Zelda Movie Release Date

Nintendo has not yet revealed when The Legend of Zelda movie will be released. In its official announcement, Nintendo only revealed the film had entered the early stages of development. Considering how long it takes to produce a movie of this caliber, we don’t expect it to be out until at least 2025.

The film, co-financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures, will be a theatrical release. Much like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the film will have its theatrical run before coming to streaming platforms. This differs from the approach of the Five Nights at Freddy’s film, which made its debut in theaters and on streaming platforms simultaneously.

Considering how Sony usually distributes its theatrical releases, The Legend of Zelda movie will likely hit major streaming platforms at a later date.

If the Mario movie is anything to go by, we should expect to see The Legend of Zelda streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Peacock after its theatrical run.

Who’s Directing the Movie?

Wes Ball will take the director’s seat in The Legend of Zelda film. While his filmography is short, Ball has previously worked on large-budget adventure films. Fans might recognize him for his work on the Maze Runner series. Now, Ball will also direct the Planet of the Apes soft reboot.

Ball’s pick is a particularly surprising one. The director hadn’t worked on any Sony movies before, and Nintendo announced its The Legend of Zelda film will be a Sony Pictures co-production. However, seeing as Ball handled the Maze Runner trilogy, the producers might have seen in him the most adequate filmmaker for a high-profile adventure film.

Speaking of producers, Nintendo also announced Avi Arad will be producing The Legend of Zelda movie. Arad needs no introduction for comic book fans. He’s responsible for bringing characters like Spider-Man and Iron Man to the big screen. It’s only fitting that he’d be the one to introduce Link to film audiences.

Fans will be pleased to know that Shigeru Miyamoto and Arad have been working on The Legend of Zelda movie for a while. A decade, to be precise. Miyamoto revealed this fact in a Q&A session on Nintendo’s latest financial release.

I know we face an extremely high hurdle in producing a film that will not disappoint the global fan base,Zelda‘s creator Shigeru Miyamoto said, “With this challenge in mind, I have been discussing this project with Avi Arad, Chairman of Arad Productions Inc., for about 10 years.

The Legend of Zelda Movie Plot Details

Unfortunately, we still don’t know any details about The Legend of Zelda‘s film plot. However, considering Nintendo’s recent marketing decisions, we can more or less guess which game the movie will follow.

While adapting the Breath of the Wild series makes some marketing sense, it would be unlikely that Nintendo would be willing to take that risk. As successful as it is, Breath of the Wild feels like a natural evolution of the Zelda series, and not a great entry point to introduce mainstream audiences to the world of Hyrule.

Considering its massive popularity, Ocarina of Time makes perfect sense as the blueprint for The Legend of Zelda movie. Not only does it feature a timeless narrative, but most fans immediately associate Ocarina with Zelda as a franchise.

Of course, adapting Ocarina of Time comes with its own set of difficulties. The production would need two main casts, one for young and one for older versions of the characters. Still, its status as the most iconic Zelda game would more than likely guarantee Ocarina of Time as the title most fans would like to see hit theaters in the future.

Who Will be Playing Link and Zelda?

Currently, there’s no official word on the cast of The Legend of Zelda live-action film. There are, however, fan favorites for the movie’s main roles. Beyond the usual picks like Tom Holland and Anya Taylor-Joy, some fans have gotten creative with their casting picks.

Zelda and Link in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom video game

As followers of The Legend of Zelda series might know, the saga rarely adheres to one canon. There have been multiple versions of Link and Zelda, each with unique physical characteristics and ages. This means that, until we know more of the film’s plot, knowing who might be the star of the show could prove tricky.

One thing we know, however, is that Nintendo will be closely monitoring the film’s development. This means that we shouldn’t expect anything too far-fetched, like those futuristic Breath of the Wild concepts. This means that Link and Zelda will likely be portrayed by caucasian actors in their mid to late 20s.
