The steamy drama Tell Me Lies was one of last year’s most talked-about new series, though reviews were decidedly mixed. Based on a novel by Carola Lovering, the show traces the toxic relationship between Lucy Albright and Stephen DeMarco over 8 years.

While critics praised the strong lead performances by Grace Van Patten and Jackson White, many took issue with the show’s messy timeline, unlikable characters, and tendency toward melodrama. However, buzz and media coverage propelled Tell Me Lies into becoming a bonafide hit for Hulu.

Within two months, the streamer renewed the subversive romance for a second season – no small feat given the lukewarm critical reception.

But over a year later, details on season two still need to be made available. Showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer is returning alongside leads Van Patten and White, ensuring continuity both behind and in front of the camera.

All that said, let’s take a look at the bits and pieces of info that have emerged since Hulu’s announcement. It might not be much, but it still paints a clear picture of when we can expect Tell Me Lies Season 2 to arrive.

The Writers’ Strike Affected Season 2’s Production

Like many other shows, the SAG-AFTRA strike affected Tell Me Lies‘ production schedule. Hulu might have renewed the series, but it was impossible to work on the new season when the writers and actors went on strike.

Showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer is a vocal supporter of the strike. In an interview with Forbes, Oppenheimer reveals that Season 2 was still in the early stages of development by May of this year.

The strike was particularly brutal on Tell Me Lies‘ production. According to Oppenheimer, at least 300 crew members lost their jobs as a result of postponed production.

With the strike over, however, production is likely to resume. Considering how little’s left of 2023, the most likely scenario is that pre-production will resume in early 2024.

An Uncertain Release Date

Despite production resuming soon, there still isn’t a definite word on when Season 2 of Tell Me Lies will come to Hulu. Regardless, we can look back at Season 1’s production schedule for clues about when the new season could arrive.

In 2021, Hulu announced it would turn Tell Me Lies into a series. Production took most of 2021 and 2022, leaving us with the show’s September 2022 release date. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that those were normal production times. Now, with the strike to consider, we might be looking at an additional six months of pre-production.

This leaves us with a possible late 2024 release date. Following Season 1’s timeline, we could probably expect Tell Me Lies‘Season 2 sometime between September and November of 2024 – if not a bit later. An early 2025 release isn’t entirely impossible, however, considering production hadn’t properly started when the strike began.

Will The Tell Me Lies Cast Return for the New Season?

Curiously, neither Jackosn White nor Grace Van Patten lists Tell Me Lies among their upcoming projects. Still, both actors – who began dating while working on the series – are closely attached to their roles.

Lucy talking to Stephen in Tell Me Lies

Van Patten even shared her ideas for Season 2 last year. According to her, Season 2 would cover the 8-year gap in the story. “Megan (Oppenheimer) has talked about the 8-year gap we don’t see,” said Van Patten in a 2022 interview with Today. In her words, the showrunner wanted to see more of Lucy and Stephen’s “Cat and mouse game.”

While there’s been no official confirmation yet, it’s safe to assume both White and Van Patten will return to star in Season 2. We already know that Megan Oppenheimer will stay as the showrunner. This all comes down to a Season 2 that will deliver the same quality fans of the show have come to love.
