Stranger Things, one of the most popular original shows on Netflix, just ended its fourth season in 2022. While it was exciting to watch, it also left audiences with some questions that they can’t wait to be answered in season 5.

But what about after the next season? Will there be a Stranger Things season 6? It would be sad to see such a beloved series come to an end, but will there be any more left of the story to tell after season 5?

In this guide, we dive deep into the clues, statements from the creators, and industry buzz to explore the potential of a Stranger Things season 6.

Will There Be a Stranger Things Season 6?

There will not be a Stranger Things season 6. Season 5 will be the finale, but the good news is, that’s the way the showrunners want it to be. The show hasn’t been canceled, but instead has come to a natural conclusion, according to Matt and Ross Duffer, the show’s creators.

The brotherly duo released an open letter to fans in February 2022 announcing that season 5 will be the end of the show.

“Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things,” the letter reads. “At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four but — as you’ll see for yourselves — we are now hurtling toward our finale […] season 5 will be the last.”

While it’s good to hear that the Duffer brothers are going to be able to finish the story the way they always planned, there are other reasons why season 6 of Stranger Things is off the table.

Young characters from the Stranger Things TV show

As every fan of the show knows, Stranger Things centers mostly around a group of young teenagers. The series started in 2016, when the characters were between the ages of 11 and 12 and the actors were between 12 and 14 years old, according to Cosmo.

Season 4 was released six years after season 1, but in-universe, only about two-and-a-half years have passed. That means most of the younger actors are approaching their 20s while their characters are only about 15 or 16!

Obviously, the older characters on the show have also been aging, but it’s much easier to see the difference in the kids than in the adults. Even if the show includes a time-skip, something the Duffer brothers have hinted at, it will have to be pretty significant to make up for the huge changes in appearance in our favorite Hawkins characters.

In fact, lead actor Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler, thinks a sixth season of Stranger Things would be pushing things too far. Wolfhard told Uproxx that “if Stranger Things went on any longer than five [seasons], I would say it would be ridiculous. I think the Duffer brothers figured out, I would imagine, a perfect ending in five.”

Will There Be Any Stranger Things Spin-Offs?

Just because season 5 is going to be the finale doesn’t mean that Stranger Things is coming to a complete halt. In the 2022 open letter, the Duffers reassure they’re audience that there are “still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things.”

While the brothers haven’t released too many more details about what’s coming next, Netflix announced on Twitter that there are a couple of spin-offs of Stranger Things in the works – one in the form of a stage play!

The series spin-off is likely to be a new story told with entirely new characters. In a July 2022 podcast interview, the Duffer brother said the series will be “1000% different” from what they’ve done before.

Matt went so far as to say that telling another story from the core cast of characters “is not interesting to [him] because [they’ve] done all that.”

The stage play, however, will have familiar characters. Slated to premiere in London in November of this year, the play will be a prequel to the main Stranger Things series.

According to the official website, the story revolves around the teenage versions of Joyce, Hopper, and even season 2’s Bob as they interact with Henry Creel from season 4.

Even more exciting is the promise that the play “may hold the key to the end.” That could mean that the play holds some hints as to the nature of season 5’s plot.

When Will the Final Season of Stranger Things Be Released?

Even though there’s no season 6 in the works, fans still have the season 5 finale of Stranger Things to look forward to. But with production delays and the ongoing WGA strike, it may be a while before the show airs.

Currently, there is no known release date for the final season of Stranger Things. Based on the time between the release of seasons 3 and 4, season 5 may not air until at least 2024.

What Will Happen in the Final Season of Stranger Things?

When the final season does premiere, what can we expect? Season 4 ended on a slight cliffhanger, implying that the entirety of Hawkins is in danger, not just a small group of people.

It’s hard to say for sure, since everyone involved in the production is keeping most things under wraps, but there are a few things we know.

First, the Duffer brothers have said that there will be no “reset” at the start of season 5; presumably the show will launch right into the cast gearing up for their final battle.

We also know that there will likely be a time-skip in season 5 to help make up for how much the young cast has aged between seasons.

Speaking of the cast, 80s icon Linda Hamilton, star of the Terminator series, will appear as a yet-to-be-named character in Stranger Things season 5.

There are also hints that we haven’t seen the last of Vecna, at least according to his actor, Jamie Campbell Bower. He hasn’t given much detail, but told The Hollywood Reporter, “Let me put it this way: I know about season five. Take from that what you will.”

But for the most part, Stranger Things season 5 is a mystery, one many fans can’t wait to be resolved.
