Since 2011, Showtime audiences have watched the Gallagher family from Shameless with morbid fascination. The dysfunctional family, headed by their addict father Frank, struggled, scraped, and schemed to get by.

The show finally ended in 2021 after 11 seasons, but die-hard fans of the show want to know what’s next. Could it come back for a season 12, or even a spin-off show? Learn more about the future of Shameless in our guide below.

Was Shameless Renewed For A 12th Season?

Showtime did not renew Shameless for season 12, ending the entire series after 11 seasons in 2021.

Gary Levine, the Showtime co-president of entertainment, announced the decision to end Shameless on January 13, 2020. “Shameless has been such a great performer for us, and we just felt like, 11 seasons is a big fat number,” Levine said.

He didn’t cite falling ratings or viewership as a reason for cancellation. In fact, he singled out how the success of the show each season and in reruns on platforms like Netflix.

“John and his people refresh it each year, and it still gets a huge audience for us as well as for that streaming services that runs our reruns (Netflix).

But in the end, Showtime felt its time was over and wanted a planned ending rather than one rushed due to cancellation down the road.

“We just felt it was time, and we also liked the idea of giving John and Co. a chance to end it well, to be able to aim for that landing.”

Beyond that, though, Levine’s reasoning behind the decision is a mystery even to showrunner John Wells. “[Gary Levine] said he thought it was time,” Wells said when asked if he knew more about Levine’s decision. “You have to ask him what his thought process was.”

Instead of season 12, Showtime produced a mini-series ahead of season 11 finale called Shameless Hall of Shame. It was a six-episode recap/retrospective that summed up the entire show.

Shameless Hall of Shame wasn’t just a clip package, though; it also included new footage of the Gallagher family to tie everything together.

Was Shameless Cancelled?

Showtime did cancel Shameless but discussed ending the show with its creator John Wells beforehand.

Sometimes a network cancels a show abruptly, catching everyone by surprise, including the showrunners. Other times, it’s a mutual decision to end the show, or the showrunners only have a set number of seasons in mind.

With Shameless, there was a middle ground between the two outcomes. John Wells, the showrunner of Shameless, admitted that Showtime’s decision disappointed him a little.

But Showtime also gave him enough time to end the show on his terms with one more season. With that in mind, Wells added, “[I was] not horribly upset because [Showtime] have been such wonderful partners all these years.”

He said that while he could write the show “forever” if he got the chance, “eleven years was a wonderful gift. I’ll just miss everybody when we’re done.”

Wells also knows too well what it’s like to not be able to wrap up a story. “I have always really regretted not being more proactive and making certain that the audience wouldn’t feel cheated.

So, he explained, “For the last few years, we have constructed final episodes that if Showtime was deciding not to move forward that we wouldn’t be doing that to the audience.”

There Could Be A Spin-Off Of Shameless In The Future

John Wells doesn’t have a spin-off planned but admits that there’s always a possibility. Wells told The Hollywood Reporter in 2020 that he actually doesn’t like reviving old shows. “There is something about the first time [shows] are on that’s kind of magical. [Shameless] was a show that people loved and you run the risk of undermining that.”

After season 11 of Shameless ended in April 2021, he confirmed that there was “nothing planned” for a spin-off. But he also said that he does have ideas “about what would happen over the next few months” for his characters and that “you never know” about a spin-off.

He also told Deadline the same thing: “Never say never in the world that we live in now.”

So, while it’s unlikely, it’s not out of the question for Shameless to get a spin-off or sequel.
