The Lord of the Rings is an indelible part of pop culture, both as literature and as visual entertainment. J.R.R. Tolkien first introduced us to the world of Middle-Earth in his book The Hobbit way back in 1937.

Afterwards, he published The Lord of the Rings (1954), a massive book split into three parts, continuing the world’s history.

The first two tales have been told numerous times, most notably by Peter Jackson in two separate film trilogies. But now, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have brokered a deal for new movies based on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

Read our guide below to learn more about what these new movies could be about, when we can expect to see them, and what you can watch to get your Lord of the Rings fix in the meantime.

New Lord Of The Rings Movies Are In Development

Warner Bros. Pictures have a deal for multiple new Lord of the Rings movies. The new movies will reportedly “honor” director Peter Jackson’s two trilogies but “look to the future” as well.

Warner Bros. joined New Line Cinemas in a deal for the adaptive rights for both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit books. The deal is with Freemode, a division of Embracer Group, with the whole project going under the name Middle-Earth Enterprises.

Lee Guinchard, the CEO of Freemode, released a statement in February 2023 about the project. “Following our recent acquisition of Middle-earth Enterprises, we’re thrilled to embark on this new collaborative journey with New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures,” he said.

Guinchard acknowledged how “cherished” The Lord of the Rings universe is and hopes to bring it “back to the big screen in new and exciting ways.”

They have some big shoes to fill, however. Peter Jackson’s early 2000s trilogy was not only hugely profitable but critically acclaimed and record-breaking.

The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) made over $898 million worldwide, while The Two Towers (2002) made over $948 million. Between those first two movies, Peter Jackson and New Line received 19 Oscar nominations, with six wins total.

But it was the final film, The Return of the King (2003), that really made its mark on history. It earned $1.147 billion worldwide and received 11 Oscar nominations – and won all of them, including Best Picture.

Despite these incredible past standards, WB heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy feel confident they have more to add.

“For all the scope and detail lovingly packed into the two trilogies [including Jackson’s three Hobbit movies], the vast, complex and dazzling universe dreamed up by J.R.R. Tolkien remains largely unexplored.”

When Will The New Lord Of The Rings Movies Come Out?

There is no release date for the new Lord of the Rings movies yet and the movies are probably at least a few years away yet.

But do not trust to hope; for a good new Lord of the Rings adaption has forsaken these lands in recent years.

In the meantime, there are two other adaptations coming in 2024. First, Amazon Studios’ television adaptation, The Rings of Power, finished filming its second season this summer. It’s likely that the season will premiere sometime in 2024.

Not only that, but the showrunners expect to have five seasons total. Showrunner JD Payne to Empire, “The rights that Amazon bought were for a 50-hour show.”

“They knew from the beginning that was the size of the canvas – this was a big story with a clear beginning, middle and end. There are things in the first season that don’t pay off until Season 5.”

In addition to The Rings of Power, there’s a new upcoming film adaptation of Lord of the Rings lore. Warner Bros. is releasing The Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim in 2024 as well.

War of Rohirrim is a prequel to the story told in Peter Jackson’s first trilogy. However, it’s not related to the future Middle-Earth Enterprises films. The animated film is due to release on December 13, 2024.

Will Peter Jackson Direct The New Lord Of The Rings Movies?

Peter Jackson will likely not direct the new Lord of the Rings movies but says that he is in contact with Warner Bros. about the project.

Jackson and his writing partners Phillipa Boyens and Fran Walsh spoke to Deadline about their level of involvement with the new movies. “Warner Brothers and Embracer have kept us in the loop every step of the way,” they said.

“We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward.”

While the statement was light on the details, it still indicates more involvement than Jackson had with Amazon Studios. Peter Jackson and his collaborators were not part of the streaming service’s show The Rings of Power.

What Will The New Lord Of The Rings Movie Be About?

There’s no confirmation about the plot for the new Lord of the Rings movies. However, the studio heads involved believe there is much more story to tell in Tolkien’s universe.

We also know that the rights deal includes “multiple” movies and will cover both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings for source material.

Some of the most popular fan ideas for new movies are as follows:

  • Young Aragorn: This movie could follow Aragorn’s journey from growing up in Rivendell, his adventures throughout Middle Earth, and becoming the leader of Dúnedain after his father.
  • The Angmar Wars: This movie would tell the story of the Witch-king of Angmar’s attempt to conquer Arnor, the kingdom of the Dúnedain. It could feature epic battles between the Witch-king’s forces and the armies of Arnor, Rivendell, and other free peoples.
  • The War in the North: This movie could focus on the events of the War of the Ring from the perspective of the Elves and Dwarves of the North. It could show how they fought back against Sauron’s forces and prevented him from gaining a foothold in their lands.
  • The Wars of Dwarves and Orcs: This movie could tell the story of the many wars that have been fought between the Dwarves and Orcs throughout history. It could feature epic battles, complex politics, and a glimpse into the rich cultures of both races.
  • The Children of Húrin: This movie could adapt the tragic story of Túrin Turambar and his sister Nienor. It would be a dark and emotional film, but it would also be a story of hope and resilience.

It’s also possible that Warner Bros. and New Line will simply create new versions of the stories that Peter Jackson already told. Basically, remakes of his LotR and Hobbit trilogies aren’t off the table.

However, the heads of Warner Bros. have said that they know how vast Tolkien’s world really is. It sounds like they’re willing to explore more lore that the other movies haven’t covered, or only skimmed over.

Warner Bros. clearly has a lot of stories to choose from, and hopefully, they stick to their promise of exploring the “vast” universe of J.R.R Tolkien.

What Is The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of Rohirrim About?

The Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim is an animated movie set 183 years before the events of the main Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The movie will follow a legendary king of Rohan named Helm Hammerhand, played by Brian Cox. War filled Hammerhand’s rule, and the movie will likely explore how he fought against the Dunlendings, an enemy people who wanted his throne.

After Hammerhand defeats Freca, one of the Dunlending lords, Freca’s son seeks vengeance against him and Rohan as a whole.

Anime director Kenji Kamiyama is directing, and Peter Jackson’s co-writer Philippa Boyen is an executive producer.

Fans of Peter Jackson’s movies will also hear at least one familiar voice in the cast. Miranda Otta will once again play Éowyn, as she did in the original trilogy, this time as the narrator.

The cast also includes Gaia Wise, daughter of acclaimed actor Emma Thompson, as Hera; Laurence Ubong Williams as Fréaláf Hildeson; and Luke Pasqualino as Wulf.

It’s important to note that this movie is not part of the new deal Warner Bros. has made with Embracer for new LotR movies.
