From the same creative team as Band of Brothers comes Masters of the Air. The show portrays the daring dogfights of WWII, particularly those led by Major Gale Cleven. With the same frenetic pacing and powerful performances, Masters of the Air already looks like a hit.

As in every historical drama, accurate portrayals matter. For that, casting directors Lucy Bevan and Olivia Grant brought in actors who matched the real-life pilots as closely as possible.

The result is a show that feels as historical as it is thrilling. With such a diverse and historically accurate cast, you might wonder how much the actors resemble their real-life counterparts.

That’s why we’ve compiled this list of Masters of the Air‘s main cast and characters, together with their ages and heights. Each character’s age reflects how old they were in 1943 when most of the action of Masters of the Air takes place.

Note: There’s no information regarding the pilots’ actual heights. For that reason, the characters’ height will be listed as the same as the actors. This concession also makes sense from a historical standpoint, as the actors’ heights are within the limits for pilots of the time.

American actor Austin Butler has been a revelation for the industry. At only 32, Butler already boasts a filmography more veteran actors would die for. His latest hit is the 2022 Elvis biopic, which earned Butler an Academy Award nomination.

At 6′ 0″, Butler stands tall among his peers – literally. His commanding persona, seen in films like The Bikeriders and The Dead Don’t Die, is evident in Masters of the Air. In the miniseries, Butler plays Major Gale “Buck” Cleven, a member of the 100th Bombardment Group deployed on the Eastern Front of WWII.

In Masters of the Air, Cleven is part of a young generation of pilots fighting against the aerial forces of Nazi Germany. Young and capable, Cleven suddenly comes face to face with the horrors of war.

Cleven enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in 1940, just before America joined WWII. With limited experience, Cleven must prove he has what’s necessary to lead the 100th Bombardment Group.

Born and raised in London, Callum Turner loves film passionately. The actor has starred in many sought-after roles, including the last two Fantastic Beasts movies, where he plays Theseus Scamander. Beyond that, Turner played Frank Churchill in 2020’s Emma. He also starred as Joe Rantz in 2023’s The Boys in the Boat.

In the series, Turner plays Major John Egan. Co-leading the 100th Bombardment Group along with Cleven, Turner is yet another young pilot proving his skills in WWII aerial dogfighting.

Egan, born in 1915, served in both World War II and the Korean War. An accomplished pilot, Egan would prove his skills by commanding the first combat mission of the 100th Bombardment Group in WWII.

Barry Keoghan is one of the most coveted Irish actors of his generation. At 5′ 8″, Keoghan is one of the shortest actors in Masters of the Air. Still, he embodies larger-than-life characters in his roles.

No stranger to historical dramas, you might have seen Keoghan in 2017’s Dunkirk, where he played George Mills. He also starred in The Killing of a Sacred Deer and American Animals, with a brief cameo as the Joker in The Batman. Recently, Keoghan has made the headlines for his performances in Saltburn and The Banshees of Inisherin.

In the series, Keoghan plays Curtis Biddick. A tough pilot born in Wisconsin, Biddick was notorious for his “bad luck.” Still, he served the 100th Bombardment Group to the end.

Masters of the Air will give Sawyer Spielberg a chance to prove his acting chops. The son of the legendary Steven Spielberg, Sawyer has appeared in a select number of roles in his career. Though mostly known for his stage performances, the actor has appeared in films like The Post and Honeydew.

Spielberg plays Roy Frank Claytor in the series. A B-17 co-pilot who was shot down over Germany in 1943, Claytor had to endure the ordeal as a prisoner of war. His story, along with Egan’s, is what inspired the writing of the book Masters of the Air, proving how essential he is to the series’ plot.

Anthony Boyle as Lieutenant Harry Crosby

An Apple TV regular by now, Anthony Boyle has starred mostly in biographical films throughout his acting career. At 5′ 7″, he’s the shortest member of the Masters of the Air cast – fitting for one of the youngest pilots in the 100th Bombardment Group.

You might have seen Boyle in the Tolkien biopic where he played Geoffrey Bache Smith. He also co-starred in the Apple TV film Tetris, where he plays the scheming Kevin Maxwell.

Harry Crosby, who flew in 32 combat missions, was a star navigator for the Bombardment Group. Renowned for his aerial prowess, Crosby would eventually become an author. He remains one of the most commemorated members of the corps.

Born in Rwanda, Ncuti Gatwa’s family was forced out of the country by the Rwandan Genocide in 1994. His family would eventually settle in Oxgangs, Scotland. Gatwa has quickly become an acting sensation, primarily for his starring roles on TV.

While most fans will recognize him from Netflix’s Sex Education, Gatwa recently became the latest Doctor Who. From a young age, Gatwa’s calling has been the theatre, but he’s also performed roles in films such as Barbie.

In Masters of the Air, Gatwa plays Second Lieutenant Robert Daniels. Part of the all-black 301st Fighter Squadron, Daniels flew with the Tuskegee Airmen in WWII. Not much is known of his background before the war, including his birth date. Instead of the iconic B-17s seen in the show, Daniels and his squad flew the equally legendary P-51 Mustangs.

Nikolai Kinski as Harold Huglin

Son of the controversially eccentric Klaus Kinski, Nikolai Kinski was born in France but soon moved to California. Kinski has been acting from a young age, encouraged by his father.

His passion for cinema has led to him starring in multiple roles. Though he mostly acts in European films, you might recognize him as Romanos from Vikings: Valhalla. In Masters of the Air, he plays the veteran Colonel Harold Huglin.

The man responsible for the 100th Bombardment Group before Egan and Cleven came along, Huglin was already a decorated officer by 1943.
