Game of Thrones was a huge cultural phenomenon, one that’s still felt today with the success of the prequel series House of the Dragon.

The original show, though, is what sparked the interest of millions of viewers. Now that it’s over, many fans are curious about what happened to the stars of the show.

Kit Harington, who played Jon Snow on Game of Thrones, is at the top of the list. He was on the show from the very beginning as a breakout star, but what’s he up to now?

This guide will tell you all about what Kit Harington has done since Game of Thrones and whether or not he’ll return to the GoT universe in the future.

What Is Kit Harington Up To Since Game Of Thrones?

After Game of Thrones, Kit Harington went to rehab, took a brief break from acting, and had two children.

After Game of Thrones ended in 2019, Kit Harington felt lost about what to do next. He started the show at just 21 years old, and it carried him through to 32.

“You look for that thing your whole career as an actor,” he said of his star-making role. “You look for that one thing that just goes big or that you’re known for.”

“And if you have it in your twenties, you’re left going ‘oh, s–t, what do I do now?’”

In 2021, Harington went on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show and confessed GoT took a toll on his mental health. He even checked into a mental health and wellness center for “some personal issues” in 2019.

His wife, Rose Leslie, opened up about the issues with Harper’s Bazaar three years later. She confirmed Kit Harington sought help for alcohol addiction at the time.

After taking a year off, which he’s grateful he did, Harington jumped back into acting. He starred in the MCU’s Eternals as Dane Whitman, an episode of Modern Love, the anthology series Extrapolation.

He was also a guest on the Friends reunion special in 2021 and received critical praise for his role in the Nation Theatre Live staging of Henry V.

Outside of acting, Kit Harington experienced a major change in his personal life. After meeting on the set of Game of Thrones, Harington and Rose Leslie married in 2018.

In 2021, three years after Game of Thrones ended, Harington became a father to a baby boy. Then, in July of 2023, the couple had another child, this time a baby girl.

Is There Going To Be A Jon Snow Sequel?

There is an upcoming Game of Thrones sequel about Jon Snow, and Kit Harington is onboard to return.

In 2022, a Hollywood Reporter exclusive claimed there was a new Game of Thrones sequel in the works. George R.R. Martin, the creator of the original book series, confirmed the report as true a few days later.

“Yes, there is a Jon Snow show in development,” Martin wrote on his personal blog. He said that the working title for the new series is Snow.

And not only is Kit Harington returning as Snow, but he is also the reason the show is happening! Both his co-star on Game of Thrones, Emilia Clarke and Martin himself confirmed that the show was Kit’s idea.

Martin said Kit brought the idea to them as well as “his own [writing/showrunning] team, and they are terrific.”

This news is a hard pivot from Harington’s stance in 2018, when he expressed no interest in doing a spin-off series. When asked by the BBC if he would come back to the GoT universe, Harington said, “Not on your life.”

Even to return for a single scene, perhaps as a Snow ancestor, the BBC reported that Harington’s answer was still “an unequivocal no.”

His stance is understandable since the end of the series brought him so much stress. But with enough distance between the Game of Thrones finale, Kit Harington is once again back in the spirit.

And HBO is there with him. In addition to the Snow sequel, there are three other series in development that continue the Game of Thrones story.

The other in-development shows are Ten Thousand Ships, an original series; another original story, Sea Snake, first announced as Nine Voyages; and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on the novella The Hedge Knight.

What Will Happen In The Jon Snow Spin-Off?

Kit Harington hinted that a new series could examine Jon Snow’s time at the Wall, and several other actors have expressed an interest in returning.

At a 2022 Game of Thrones convention panel, Kit Harington avoided directly referencing the new spin-off. However, he did give some ideas about what fans could expect and what he thinks happened to Jon Snow after GoT.

“I think if you asked [Snow], he would’ve felt he got off lightly,” the actor said about Jon being banished to the Wall. “At the end of the show when we find him in that cell, he’s preparing to be beheaded and he wants to be.”

“He’s done. The fact he goes to the Wall is the greatest gift and also the greatest curse.”

Harington said it would be “interesting” to see Jon Snow deal with all of the “trauma” he went through at the end of the main series.

A few familiar faces from the original Game of Thrones may also appear in the new series. Gwendoline Christie said she would love to reprise her role as Brienne of Tarth.

“[She] is incredibly close to my heart,” Christie told Newsweek, “and I would relish any opportunity to revisit her. I believe she is enduring.”

John Bradley, who played Samwell Tarely, also said that “if somebody wants to send a script [his] way [he’d] be interested to read it.”

Otherwise though, everyone is being very quiet about specific details for Snow. But at least fans of the series, Jon Snow, and Kit Harington know that there’s a good chance they’ll see a new show soon.
