Remember Forrest Gump, the lovable simpleton who stumbled his way through some of the biggest events in American history?

In 1994, when the movie came out, we all thought it was cute that his army buddy Lieutenant Dan invested their shrimping fortune in “some fruit company” called Apple.

Even back in the ’90s, before the iPhone revolution, Apple was a big deal in the tech world. However, now that the Cupertino tech company is a global behemoth, it’s safe to say that Gump’s stocks are worth a pretty penny.

Exactly how much money are we talking about here? Well, let’s just say he wouldn’t need to ride the bus ever again.

How Much Would Forrest Gump’s Apple Investment Be Worth In 2023?

Considering Gump and Lt. Dan bought a 3% share of Apple in 1974, their investment would be worth roughly $66.63 billion in 2023. This number is based on a $2.22 trillion market cap and would rank Gump and Dan among the world’s richest people.

Curiously, their shared fortune would put them ahead of Michael Dell. According to the Bloomberg Billionaire Index, Gump would go head to head against some of today’s most powerful tech moguls.

We never see Gump really flaunting this fortune in the film. By the time he received news of his newfound money, Apple’s stocks weren’t nearly as lucrative as they are today. Still, for fans hoping to see Gump’s luxurious life as a tech magnate in a potential sequel, it would be better to let go of those hopes.

Will There Be a Sequel to Forrest Gump?

There are no plans to make a Forrest Gump 2 anytime soon. Tom Hanks shot down the rumors in an episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz in September 2022. “We did take a stab at talking about another Forrest Gump,” says Hanks, “that lasted all of 40 minutes.”

According to screenwriter Eric Roth, 9/11 is to blame for the lack of a Forrest Gump sequel. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button‘s writer mentioned that he delivered his concept for Forrest Gump 2 just one day before the attacks.

After that, Robert Zemeckis and the crew all agreed the world wasn’t in the mood for a new Forrest Gump movie.

The sequel would originally continue the story exactly where the first movie ended. Gump would still be sitting on the park bench, waiting for the bus. Knowing Gump, it’s safe to say he’d eventually come across some historical characters or pivotal moments from US history.

Unfortunately for fans, we’ll never see billionaire Forrest Gump flaunting his wealth in a sequel. At least, we know that, in the Forrest Gump universe, the Gumps are doing pretty good for themselves – probably even more so after the iPhone’s launch.
