As the sun sets over the magnificent Highclere Castle, the silhouette of which has become synonymous with Downton Abbey, whispers of a seventh season stir the air.

Could Season 7 be on the horizon? The tantalizing possibility of donning our virtual evening gowns and tailcoats to revisit this portrayal of history, meticulously crafted with gripping plotlines, exquisite costumes, and sterling performances, is simply irresistible.

Hints, whispers, and industry leaks all seem to point towards the promising possibility of a Downton Abbey Season 7.

This article aims to weave together these tantalizing strands of information, speculation, and anticipation, as we explore the possibility of Downton Abbey making a triumphant return to our screens.

Will There be a Downtown Abbey Season 7?

There’s no official confirmation of Downton Abbey, season 7, but sources say that there are talks of developing it.

In May 2023, the Daily Mail reported that Carnival Films, Downton Abbey’s production company, is casting for a potential small-screen return for the show.

While there have been two films released in theaters since 2019, the show hasn’t been on television since 2015.

The Daily Mail also reported news about the show’s creator, Julian Fellowes. Fellowes is allegedly “in talks” with the cast about returning for a seventh season.

The MailOnline received word about a potential return for the show as well. An inside source said that “there is a plan which is in development and there is a lot of excitement about. There is casting taking place, and it would be great if all of the big stars can return.”

“People loved Downton,” the anonymous source said. “It became a British institution and it has been much missed since it left our screens.”

They added, “There is huge excitement around this project. It was a Sunday night favorite and got huge viewing figures. There has been very little to compete with it ever since it ended.”

However, it is important to note that these are just initial reports. The show’s creators and cast have not made any official announcements yet.

There is no guarantee that Downton Abbey will return for a seventh season, much to the dismay of its fans.

If Downton Abbey does return for a season 7, it likely won’t air for a couple of years. The show’s creator, Julian Fellowes, is currently working on other projects, including the hit Netflix series The Gilded Age.

It’s possible that Fellowes will not be able to start work Downton Abbey again until after The Gilded Age finishes.

Why Downtown Abbey Could Return for a Season 7

A few factors suggest Downtown Abbey, season 7 makes sense. Firstly, the show was a commercial success, pulling in 13.3 million viewers a week at its peak.

It also received numerous accolades during its run, including 69 Emmy nominations, of which it won 15.

And although there were two theatrical films that follow season 6, there are still plenty of stories left to tell.

Tom and Lucy have a new baby at the end of Downton Abbey: A New Era. Season 7 could follow their growing family alongside Sybbie as she takes her inheritance over the French villa.

On the “downstairs” side of things, fans would love to see if Thomas Barrow has found happiness with actor Guy Dexter. In A New Era, the two agreed to travel together as secretly romantic partners.

Then there’s the expressed interest of original cast members like Hugh Bonneville and Michelle Dockery to return. This signals persistent creative energy towards the show.

Conversely, several considerations could hinder a season 7. Declining ratings over recent years suggest waning interest. While still successful, the premier of season 5 only pulled in 9.9 million viewers.

The aging cast could pose continuity challenges as well. Penelope Wilton, who plays Isobel Grey, Lady Merton, is already 77 years old.

Finally, creators Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame’s openness to a seventh season doesn’t preclude them moving on to other projects. A series like The Gilded Age could prove more successful and satisfying for them than a return to Downton Abbey.

Downtown Abbey Season 7 Potential Plot Points

If Downton Abbey were to return for a seventh season, there are a number of storylines that could be explored. Here are a few ideas:

  • The Crawley family’s future: How will the Crawley family hold up after the death of their matriarch, the Dowager Countess of Grantham? What changes will Downton Abbey face with the coming Depression and another world war around the corner?
  • The coming Depression of the 1930s: A New Era ended in 1929, just before the Gret Depression, also known as the Great Slump. Where the 20s were filled with excess and joy, the 30s were difficult for everyone, even wealthy people like the Crawley family. It could be interesting to see how the Great Depression affects not only the owners of Downton Abbey, but also their servants.
  • The lives of the servants: The servants of Downton Abbey are often overlooked, but they are an important part of the show. A seventh season could explore their lives in more detail and show how they are affected by the changes that are taking place after Violet’s death.
  • The relationship between Thomas Barrow and Guy Dexter: After struggling with being closeted and facing so much hardship, fans of Barrow were thrilled to see him get a happy ending. But a seventh season could explore his relationship with Dexter in more detail and add a new layer of complexity to the show’s relationships.
  • The introduction of new characters: A seventh season could introduce new characters to the world of Downton Abbey. These characters could help to keep the show fresh and introduce new storylines.

These are just a few ideas of what could happen in a seventh season of Downton Abbey. However, there is no doubt that there is still plenty of story to tell at Downton Abbey.

Will the Original Cast Return for a Season 7 of Downton Abbey?

There is no guarantee that the original cast of Downton Abbey will return for a seventh season. However, several cast members have expressed interest in returning. This includes Hugh Bonneville, Sophie McShera, and Michelle Dockery.

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not the original cast returns will come down to the individual actors. If their schedules line up, then there is a good chance that they will all return for a seventh season.

Maggie Smith as Violet Grantham in Downton Abbey

But, of course, season 7 will have to do without Dame Maggie Smith, since her character, Violet, died at the end of the second film.

Here are some statements from the cast about their willingness to return for a seventh season:

  • Hugh Bonneville (Robert Crawley): “I’d be up for it. I think there’s still more story to tell.”
  • Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary Crawley): “I’d love to do it. I think there’s still so much to explore with the characters.”
  • Sophie McShera (Daisy Mason): “I’m ready (to return)[…] I love Downton and I love working with everyone, it’s amazing.”

Only time will tell if the original cast of Downton Abbey will return for a seventh season. However, there is certainly a lot of interest from both the cast and the fans.
