Criminal Minds is the show that just won’t quit, much to the delight of its fans. Although the original series ended after 15 seasons in 2020, Paramount Plus revived the show just two years later after a huge spike in streaming of the episodes.

Rebranded as Criminal Minds: Evolution, the first new season was a hit, and now Paramount has renewed the show for yet another season, bringing the series total up to 17.

We’ve got the scoop on the possible release date of Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2, as well as the best ways to watch once the season premieres.

Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 Release Date

Paramount+ renewed Criminal Minds: Evolution for season 2 in January 2023. There’s no official release date yet, but production will hopefully resume in January 2024.

On January 12, 2023, the Paramount+ Instagram shared an image of the show with the word “RENEWED” attached. “Wheels up for another season!” the caption read, referencing a catchphrase from the show that any fan would recognize.

But then, in May, the Writer’s Guild of America went on strike. The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) followed suit in July.

Both strikes caused delays in many film and TV productions, including Criminal Minds. But now, with both guilds in tentative new agreements with production studios, season 2 of Criminal Minds: Evolution is back on track.

The writer’s room for the series opened up again on Monday, October 2nd, 2023, according to Deadline. And Paget Brewster, who plays Emily Prentiss on the show, shared an update about filming in early November.

According to Brewster, filming will begin on season 2 of Criminal Minds: Evolution in mid-January.

Season 1 began filming in August 2022; the revived series then aired on November 24, 2022. The next season – season 2 of Evolution and season 17 of Criminal Minds overall – will likely follow the same pattern.

If filming begins again as scheduled in January 2024, we could see the first episode of season 17 by April 2024.

Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 Cast

Showrunner Erica Messer confirmed that Zach Gilford will return in season 17 as Elias Voit. Other returning cast members include Ryan-James Hatanaka, Kirsten Vangsness, and Adam Rodriguez.

Erica Messer told TVLine in February 2023 that “everybody in the main cast is coming back.” That includes Paget Brewster, Joe Montagna, Kirsten Vangsness, Adam Rodriguez, and AJ Cook.

She also told Variety that there’s a very good chance that Ryan-James Hatanaka will return as Tyler Green. Beyond that, though, Messer says she can’t make any promises.

While she’d love for Matthew Gray Gubler and Daniel Henney to reprise their characters, “everybody has these lives outside of our show, and that’s the tricky part.”

But Messer says that special Agents Spencer Reid and Matt Simmons are “certainly not forgotten…. [They] are not gone gone” from the show’s universe.

Where To Watch Season 2 of Criminal Minds: Evolution

Season 2 of Criminal Minds: Evolution will likely be available on the same platforms as the previous seasons, such as Disney Plus and Paramount Plus.

USA:Paramount Plus, Pluto TV, Prime Video, Roku
Canada:Disney Plus
UK:Disney Plus
Australia:Disney Plus

Right now, you can rent each season 1 of Criminal Minds: Evolution in the US on Google Play, Apple TV/iTunes, Vudu, and YouTube.

Season 2 of Criminal Minds: Evolution will likely be available through these sources as well.

It’s important to note that Paramount considers Criminal Minds: Evolution a continuation of the original series. So, streaming services are listing season 1 as “season 16” of the original Criminal Minds.

Therefore, they’ll also list season 2 as “season 17.” So, remember: when you want to watch Criminal Minds: Evolution, look for it as season 16 and season 17 under the main Criminal Minds page.

How To Watch Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 For Free

In the United States, you can watch Criminal Minds: Evolution for free with ads on Pluto TV.

In countries like Canada and Australia and the UK, Criminal Minds: Evolution is only available on Disney Plus, which no longer directly offers free trials.

However, various membership services like Tesco and Samsung sometimes offer their customers free monthly subscriptions to Disney Plus.

Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 1 Ending Explained

Criminal Minds: Evolution picked up where season 15 of the original series ended, but with some new BAU members.

Additionally, the season introduced the prolific serial killer Elias Voit as the overarching villain of the season. Previously, Criminal Minds focused on one-off unsubs (unknown subjects), with the occasional multi-episode arch for special cases.

But in the first season of Criminal Minds: Evolution, Voit is the head of a huge network of serial killers. While the Behavioral Analysis Unit tracks down different killers every week, each one leads them deeper into Voit’s web.

At the end of the season, Rossi finally catches a break and tracks down Voit in person. But the confrontation doesn’t end well, and Voit locks Rossi inside one of Voit’s shipping containers he uses to hide his dead victims.

In the final episode, “Dead End,” the rest of the BAU is still scrambling to find both Rossi and Voit, while Voit’s wife and daughters confront him about his murderous activities.

To make matters worse, members of the DOJ seem to be willing to let Voit go free to protect something called “Gold Star.” Luckily, after a tense shootout, Voit is captured and tells his wife Rossi’s location.

Rossi is safe and Voit is arrested, but the question of what “Gold Star” is still lingers, and Voit gets a mysterious visitor while under arrest.

Will There Be A Season 3 Of Criminal Minds: Evolution?

Since season 2 of Criminal Minds: Evolution is still to come, there’s no confirmation of a season 3 just yet.

However, since the original show was revived just two years after the series “finale,” the popularity of Criminal Minds can’t be understated.

Season 18 of Criminal Minds – or season 3 Criminal Minds: Evolution, if you prefer – could be renewed by late 2024. That’s during season 2 or right after it ends.
