Tragedy struck the cast and fans of the hit HBO show Euphoria when the family of the actor who played Fezco, Angus Cloud, found him dead at the age of 25. Rumors spread about the death being a suicide, but new information has since emerged.

The actor was a very private person and didn’t often share details of his private life with the public. Euphoria was also his first acting role, one he landed by a random chance when he wasn’t even looking to act.

Read on as we look at how Angus Cloud died, his life before he became an actor, his success with HBO, and what those who knew him have to say about his passing.

Angus Cloud’s Family Announces The Actor’s Death

On Monday, July 31, 2023, Angus Cloud’s family announced to CNN that they found Angus Cloud dead that morning.

“It is with the heaviest heart that we had to say goodbye to an incredible human today,” the family’s statement said.

“As an artist, a friend, a brother and a son, Angus was special to all of us in so many ways. Last week he buried his father and intensely struggled with this loss.”

“The only comfort we have is knowing Angus is now reunited with his dad, who was his best friend.”

“Angus was open about his battle with mental health and we hope that his passing can be a reminder to others that they are not alone and should not fight this on their own in silence.”

How Did Angus Cloud Die?

Angus Cloud died of an accidental overdose; his system contained traces of cocaine, methamphetamine, fentanyl, and benzodiazepines (antidepressants).

It took two months after Cloud’s death for the release of an overdose confirmation. When first responders arrived on the scene in Oakland, they “determined [Cloud] to be already deceased.” At first, the police didn’t announce an official cause of death, and they began a deeper investigation.

However, when Angus’s mother called 911, she reported a “possible overdose.” But from the beginning, Angus’s mother denied that Angus intentionally committed suicide. “We may find out that he overdosed accidentally and tragically,” Lisa Cloud said shortly after his death, “but it’s abundantly clear that he did not intend to check out of this world.”

In an emotional Facebook post, Lisa Cloud outlined the last few days of Angus’s life. She says he was talking about his future plans and reorganizing his room.

“Social media posts have suggested his death was intentional,” she said. “I want you to know that is not the case.”

Now that an overdose has been confirmed, Lisa Cloud has reiterated that her son’s death was accidental. Speaking to People, Lisa said, “It was predominantly the central nervous system depressants [that killed Angus]. It started to slow his heart and slow his breathing. He got tired from lack of oxygen. Everything just slowed down, and eventually his heart stopped and he went to sleep. But he didn’t kill himself.”

Lisa admitted that her son struggled with addiction, which she believes stemmed from a heel injury during the pandemic. Angus was secretly using drugs on the set of Euphoria, but Lisa said it was this injury that “really […] started his drug-seeking behavior.”

Angus Cloud’s Big Break On Euphoria

In a fairy tale sort of twist, the assistant of a casting agent randomly spotted Angus Cloud in 2021. He was working at a chicken-and-waffles joint in Brooklyn at the time and had been planning to leave for Ireland.

Although he initially thought the audition invitation was a scam, Cloud went along and ended up getting his big break as the character of Fezco on HBO’s Euphoria.

And what a break! Euphoria was a smash, becoming HBO’s second-most viewed show, after Game of Thrones.

Fezco was a drug dealer who lived with his grandmother and was close friends with the main character, Rue, played by Zendaya. Fez quickly became a fan-favorite character on the show.

Shockingly, this was Angus Cloud’s first ever acting role. The show’s success and Fez’s popularity got Cloud further roles in music videos and even an indie movie called North Hollywood in 2021.

Angus Cloud’s Early Life

Angus Cloud, whose real name was Conor Angus Cloud Hickey, was born in 1998 in Oakland, California. He grew up there with his father, mother, and two younger twin sisters.

As a teenager, Angus Cloud attended the Oakland School for the Arts – the very same school that his future co-star Zendaya attended. But he wasn’t there for acting; he worked behind the scenes instead.

Though a California native, Cloud had Irish roots. His father, who tragically passed shortly before his son, was born in Ireland.

In fact, just before Cloud got his big break on Euphoria, he was considering living in his family’s homeland himself. “I was gonna move to Ireland for a while,” he told The Wall Street Journal in 2019. “All my family lives out there.”

Angus Cloud kept many details of his personal life to himself, even his birthday. He told Glamour in 2022 that he didn’t want people to judge him on his astrological sign.

Cast and Fan Tributes To Angus Cloud

The announcement of Angus Cloud’s death rocked the entertainment world. An HBO spokesperson said of Cloud’s death, “We are incredibly saddened […] He was immensely talented and a beloved part of the HBO and Euphoria family.”

“We extend our deepest condolences to his friends and family during this difficult time.”

Sam Levinson, the creator of Euphoria, told Variety, “There was no one quite like Angus. He was too special, too talented and way too young to leave us so soon.”

His co-stars from Euphoria have also spoken out, taking to social media to express their grief. “I’ve always respected your kindness, tomfoolery, and ability to take up space,” Storm Reid, who plays Gia Bennett, said on Instagram. “You are SO loved.”

Other cast members like Sydney Sweeney, Maude Apatow, and Colman Domingo also shared tributes on Instagram to their lost friend and co-star:

And of course, Zendaya, who plays the lead character Rue, had her own heartbreaking words to say about Cloud.

“Words are not enough to describe the infinite beauty that is Angus,” she posted next to a picture of her co-star.

“I know people use this expression often when talking about folks they love…’they could light up any room they entered’ but boy let me tell you, he was the best at it.”

“I’d like to remember him that way. For all of the boundless light, love and joy he always managed to give us. I’ll cherish every moment.”

It’s clear that Angus Cloud was a beloved member of Euphoria, and his family, friends, and fans will miss him dearly.
